Picking the right chandelier isn’t just about style — size matters more than most people realize. A fixture that’s too small looks lost above your table, while one that’s too big can overwhelm the room and even feel unsafe hanging low. Here’s a simple way to get it right.
Match the chandelier to your table
A quick rule of thumb: add the length and width of your dining table together (in inches or centimeters), and that total is roughly the diameter your chandelier should be. For example, a table that’s 150cm long and 90cm wide gives you a target chandelier diameter of around 60-70cm. This keeps the fixture proportional so it feels like it belongs, not like an afterthought.
Get the height right
For standard 8-foot (2.4m) ceilings, hang the bottom of the chandelier about 30-36 inches (75-90cm) above the tabletop. If your ceiling is higher, add roughly 3 inches of hanging height for every extra foot of ceiling height. Too high and the light washes out the room instead of centering it over the table; too low and it gets in the way of conversation — or worse, someone’s line of sight to the person across from them.
Consider the shape of your table
Rectangular tables usually look best with an elongated or linear chandelier, or two smaller pendants spaced evenly.
Round or square tables pair naturally with a single round or drum-shaped chandelier centered above them.
Island bars or narrow tables work well with a slim, elongated design rather than a wide, round one.
Don’t forget brightness, not just size
